The risks posed by invasive species...

How that roles off your tongue and into your mind. As I sit through a lecture by Dr. Charles Perrings from Arizona State I am dosed with more graphs, charts and facts than I care for.

Invasive species travel the world free of charge, via our ships and planes. These species include any living (viruses, too) organisms: rats, snails, the flu and SARs. They're messing things up for countries. Think about SARS on planes from Asian countries, and the issues people talked about then. These diseases come from areas of high international interaction. Dr. Perrings just displayed a map "highlighting" areas (red areas) of heavy trade (I think). He pointed out SARS coming from a highlighted area in China and AIDS coming from a highlighted area in Africa. These examples and several other issues relevant to sustainability and the growth (or shrinking if you like) of our world are pretty interested to anyone becoming an adult right now. These will be (some already are) issues that will be important in election times, the jobs we have and companies we support in the next 50 years.

Sustainability, international trade, climate change, and expanding economies abroad are all important issues to everyone that breaths the free air. Funny, the air and oceans are free and from this lecture I see how we have taken advantage of these resources, perhaps taken it too far.

"What is our wealth? It's our human capital" and information. These two things are the only things that can and do have an effect on our environmental resources. Lets not loss it by overusing it.
